5 - Problems

Solving a mathematical problem, is finding the solution to the problem by doing calculations. Examples :

Problems with additions

eclipse de soleil Charlie is a 7-year-old child. He knows that an eclipse of sun is going to happen in 6 years. He wonders how old he will be when the eclipse happens. How old will Charlie be in 6 years?

To determinate how old he will be, you have to add 6 years to his current age. You write down and calculate the addition 7 + 6, then you write a sentence to conclude and answer the question.
7 + 6 = 13 so in 6 years, Charlie will be 13-year-old.

Problems with subtractions

classe In a class of 25 pupils, 17 pupils listen to the teacher, the others chat all the time. How many pupils chat?

To determinate the number of pupils who chat, you have to take away the 17 pupils who listen to the teacher from the 25 pupils. You write and subtract 25 - 17, and then you write a sentence to conclude and answer the question.
25 - 17 = 8 so in this class, there are 8 pupils who chat.

Problems with multiplications

classe Jack's mother sometimes gambles. Each time she gambles, she loses 2 dollars. Last year, she played 9 times. How much money did she lose?

To determinate how much money she lost you have to add 9 times 2 dollars. You write and calculate the multiplication 9 2, then you write a sentence to conclude and answer the question.
9 2 = 18 so last year, Jack's mother lost 18 dollars gambling.
